When It Comes To Mattresses Futon Owners Don’t Have To Settle

Before we were married, my husband purchased a futon which would furnish our studio apartment and act as our bed as well. It was a cheap used thing, but it looked nice enough and we did fine with it. For the first year or two it was okay, but after sleeping on it night after night, the mattress, a simple cotton stuffed affair, became very flat and rather hard.

On top of this problem of comfort, there was also the issue of the mattress slouching down when the futon was folded as a couch. This was very frustrating and after nights sleeping on a hard surface and days spent readjusting the mattress to sit on we finally gave up and decided to look into buying a new mattress.

We went to a mattress store and what a surprise! We were shocked at the variety in the mattresses futon section! They weren’t all simple cotton pads like the one we had been sleeping on for almost two years, there were mattresses that were actually comfortable and that even acted like a real bed!

The mattress we finally chose was the most comfortable one they had. Although we were poor students (hence the studio apartment and futon bed) we had had enough of poor sleep and felt we deserved a good mattress. This one had inner springs and comfortable padding. It was like heaven.

This was ten years ago, and since then, futon mattresses have only improved over time. Of course you can still get a very inexpensive futon with a cotton pad like the one we started out with, but there are so many other options available right up to practically luxury futons (although that may sound like an oxymoron).

The type of mattress you choose will depend on the size of your futon as well as on its strength and situation. When we bought our new mattress, we quickly discovered that it would not sit on the frame because it was just too thick. We went out and bought a simple metal frame and that did the trick just fine.

Futon mattresses are made by many of the best known mattress manufacturers so you can find one that you should be able to trust. Such well known brands as Serta and Simmons, among others, make a range of mattresses futon owners can choose from. They range in thickness and size and are made from different materials, some with inner springs and others utilizing modern foams.

If you have a futon, whether you sleep on it, or leave that for guests, you want to be sure that your mattress is comfortable for both sitting and sleeping. Take a look at the mattresses offered by known name brands and don’t settle for the old mattress it came with.
